- Gartner cyst
Gartner cyst is a benign vaginal cyst that originates from the Gartner duct, a vestigial remnant of the wolffian duct in females. It is usually located along the anterior and lateral parts of the vaginal wall.
Clinical manifestation
- Infections
- Bladder dysfunction
- Abdominal pain
- Vaginal discharge
- Urinary incontinence
- Dysmenorrhea
Diagnosis
- A detailed gynecological exam of the patient and a review of their medical history are essential.
- Gentle palpation of the vaginal wall, especially on the anterolateral wall, may reveal a cyst.
- A speculum exam can ensure a clear view of the vaginal walls and may also reveal a cyst.
- Imaging – Ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI scan for more detailed visualization of the cyst and its borders.
Treatment
Treatment is only recommended when symptoms are significant.
In mild symptomatic cases, treatment involves cyst drainage and intracystic tetracycline sclerotherapy.
In severe cases, surgical removal of the cyst is recommended.
Cyst marsupialization can be done, in which the incision edges are sutured together to form a permanently open “pocket,” allowing additional fluid to drain freely.
